The Manor House at Spier has been beautifully restored to host small, intimate food and wine experiences. A small group of media and friends was invited to the launch dinner of the Manor House Food and Wine Experience on Wednesday evening 8 February 2023. It was a really special experience to see the restored manor house. Everywhere you look, there are beautiful artworks by artists including Athi Patra-Ruga, Billie Zangewa and Igshaan Adams. The voorkamer houses the striking Mieliepap Pietá sculpture by Wim Botha – an exact mirror image of Michelangelo’s Pietà. We sat down for dinner after exploring the Manor House. Cellarmaster Johan Jordaan welcomed us and Chef Phil Carmichael told us a little about himself. Chef Phil prepared a delicious five-course dinner, mostly using produce from the farm. Some of the dishes served included heirloom tomato salad, Farmer Angus Beef Wellington with Creative Block 5 Bordelaise sauce, and white chocolate and coconut pannacotta. Each course was perfectly paired with special Spier wines like the Frans K. Smit range's white and red blends, 21 Gables Chenin Blanc, and Cap Classique R.D. All in all, everyone had a wonderful time and I can highly recommend this experience to any foodie!
