Anna de Koning was a force to be reckoned with, and at Groot Phesantekraal farm in Durbanville, the current owners, Ronelle and Andre Brink (or custodians as they see themselves) have honoured Anna with a Blue Plaque by the Cape Town Heritage Foundation. Chenin Blanc has also become the calling card of Groot Phesantekraal and have also named their top Chenin after this formidable woman. She was one of South Africa's first freed slaves and was married to Swedish explorer Olaf Bergh (now well known as a brandy). When he passed on, she inherited the farm from him and ran it on her own for many years. We celebrated this on Tuesday with a delicious lunch at their very special restaurant, which is a beautifully restored building from the 1700s.Well done to the Brink family for all they do to honour history, as well as making stunning wines!
